Do you have photos and memories of live lived against the backdrop of wallpaper?
We are creating an archive of memories about wallpaper.
We are looking for pictures and stories of the lived experiences wallpapers have witnessed, including: mess, joy, isolation, children, parties, laundry, fights, pets, friends, houseplants, faith, family occasions, relationships, meals, illness, and bereavement.
Share with us
Get in touch online to share your photos, or arrange to drop them off in person to be scanned. Selected contributions will go on display in the Open House exhibition, online, and in a special Open House ‘family album’ book.
Your contributions will transform the Whitworth’s wallpaper collection. Together we are expanding and enlivening the kind of information we hold about wallpaper. Through this we open up the vast potential of the collection to tell untold stories about home life in the twentieth century. Wallpaper began to be replaced by painted walls in the 1980s. Open House captures memories of this era before they fade. Throughout the project we are asking, who or what is missing from the story so far? Tell your story!
