Carpet Game

Do you remember the carpets and curtains that lived alongside the wallpaper? Here is a story from one of our contributors about a childhood game involving his carpet at home.

Carpet Game, c.2004-2005

In my childhood me and my cousins would play a game on the patterned carpet in our house. The carpet was a deep maroon colour with yellow, green and blue details and patterns. We would play a game where we had to walk across the trail of patterns, and if we stepped off the trail we would lose the game. I really enjoyed this game, and old photos bring back memories. The carpet brought life to the room as an interactive object. Perhaps if the carpet had been one colour with no pattern our childhood bonds would not have been so strong. In this way, pattern and colour help the flourishing of childhood imagination – without this stimulation (if all our environments were void of colour and pattern) what would the world look like?

Did you know that the Whitworth also has a collection of household carpet samples?

The slideshow above shows some examples.
